Fuel cell commercialisation is moving forward rapidly across the world. Between December 2005 and 2006, the number of new units deployed worldwide grew by 67%[1], revenues increasing by 59% and employment increasing by 10%[2].
The UK fuel cell industry is characterised by a number of world class system developers, active across a range of application areas. Companies such as Ceres Power, Ceramic Fuel Cells, Intelligent Energy and Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems are designing products which will revolutionise transport and stationary power markets. Others are developing and supplying innovative materials and components; these range from established players such as Johnson Matthey and Unitec Ceramics through to innovative start-ups, such as BAC2 and Acal Energy. Through its international partnerships, the UK is well placed to compete effectively in the global arena. Typically over 50% of UK production is currently exported.
The growing industry is creating new jobs, and there are currently over 100 UK companies contributing to the creation of the global fuel cell industry.
