Centre for New Technologies, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CENTIVE)

Areas of Interest:

The focus of CENTIVE is on innovation and entrepreneurship in the development and diffusion of new technology i.e. the business aspects. Fuel cell technology is seen as a potentially disruptive innovation in a number of different market applications and hence an excellent technology to study.

Activity and Expertise:

CENTIVE has a dual focus:

1.      New technologies, the industries developing around them, and the sectors on which they impact (including financial services as a major user, and as a source of capital investment for these technologies).

2.      Theoretical and practical issues to do with clusters, innovation, and entrepreneurship, on which the success of these industries rests.

Development and diffusion of fuel cells as a disruptive innovation

This project studies fuel cell development from the firm’s perspective, for automotive, power generation and portable electronic applications. The study encompasses development and diffusion of fuel cells in Europe, N. America and Japan.  This project is being undertaken jointly with the Centre for Energy and the Environment (CEE) at City University.

Credentials:

Funding has been obtained from the Economic and Social Research Council Sustainable Development Programme to research best practice for the development and diffusion of fuel cells. However, other recent research includes Opto-Electronics/Photonics, Biotechnology, ICT, E-Business & Knowledge Management, Advanced Materials & Nano Technology and funding has been received from a range of sponsors including:
