Fuel Cells UK welcomes the launch of the new UK Low Carbon Economic Area focusing on Hydrogen Energy
Fuel Cells UK is delighted to welcome the creation of the new Low Carbon Economic Area (LCEA) focusing on hydrogen energy, announced on the 12th February by Lord Hunt, Minister of State for Energy & Climate Change during a visit to Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells’ global manufacturing facility in Lydiard Fields in Swindon. The LCEA will cover South Wales and the South West of England initially, providing a hub for the UK’s hydrogen activities, and will build on the region’s expertise in hydrogen production. A key aim will be to establish an internationally recognised centre of excellence and expertise in hydrogen technologies encompassing the full hydrogen energy value chain. Fuel Cells UK factsheets reveal the real status of fuel cell deployment and commercialization
Fuel Cells UK has prepared a couple of factsheets to show the real status of fuel cell technology. Factsheet 1: ‘Did you know that…’ contains key statistics on fuel cell use in transport, stationary and portable applications as well as data on hydrogen, the fuel cell and hydrogen industry, research and academic activities in the UK, international support for fuel cells and green job creation. Among other interesting facts, you can find out how many stationary fuel cells have been installed globally, how many hydrogen refuelling stations operates worldwide and what the estimated size of the world fuel cell industry is. Factsheet 2: ‘Myths vs. realities’ addresses the common myths about fuel cells and hydrogen by providing arguments on the real status of the industry. It highlights that fuel cells are already available commercially, that hydrogen is at least as safe as other commercially available fuels etc.

Ultra Low Carbon Vehicle Technology and Supply Network Development – the TSB funding competition
On the 8th February 2010, the Technology Strategy Board launched the fourth competition within the Integrated Delivery Programme - the programme that aims to integrate the low carbon vehicle innovation chain and invest in industry-led collaborative research, development and demonstration projects in the area of low and ultra low carbon vehicles. The competition is funded jointly by the Technology Strategy Board and Office for Low Emission Vehicles. The TSB is planning to invest in three to six projects that will strengthen the UK’s supply networks for vehicle-centric technologies. This is expected to deliver a major improvement in cutting carbon dioxide emissions. The competition closes on 1st of April.
Fuel cells promoted during the Winter Olympics 2010 in Canada
The Winter Olympics 2010 in Vancouver officially opened on Friday, the 12th February. These Olympics have strongly promoted fuel cells and hydrogen through a number of showcase applications. These include 20 fuel cell buses (37 seats, 60 person standing capacity, top speed 90 kph) in Whistler in British Columbia, demonstrating how fuel cell buses can be integrated into the regular service, and 8 fuel cell SUVs transporting officials, media, athletes and government representatives at the Games.
Intelligent Energy and Suzuki showcase the Burgman fuel cell scooter in London
On the 3rd of February, Intelligent Energy and Suzuki launched their Suzuki Burgman Fuel Cells Scooter in the City Hall, London. The scooter is equipped with proprietary air-cooled fuel cell system fuelled by hydrogen. The scooter offers a 350km driving range and can be refuelled in just few minutes. Later this year, it will start public road tests and demonstration, initially in Loughborough and later during controlled fleet tests in London.
Fuel Cells UK members dominate successful applicants to the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Demonstrator Programme
On the 12th February, the Technology Strategy Board officially announced the 15 successful demonstrators under its Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Demonstrator Programme - the competition for up to £7.2m funding for fuel cell and hydrogen demonstration that opened in September 2009 as a part of the Government’s activities to stimulate the low carbon economy in the UK. The successful applicants include: Intelligent Energy ltd., Acal Energy, Diverse Energy Ltd., CPI, Logan Energy Ltd., Johnson Matthey and ITM Power.
